ISLAY FIRST RESPONDERS
We support projects that meet real needs on Islay. Some are led by us. Others are driven by local people. All are focused on making life better for the community.
In remote or island locations like Islay getting immediate help and treatment for sudden medical emergencies can take a considerable time. In many of these areas first responder groups plug the gap between the 999 call and the arrival of the ambulance, helping their neighbours when they need it most and providing life saving first aid that might otherwise come too late.
Islay residents Jordan Cresswell and George Stewart, both experienced first responders, approached us for support and we all agreed to work together, to try and make their intention of setting up an Islay Voluntary First Responder Group a reality.
For an island the size of Islay we need 8 to 12 volunteer First Responders as a minimum for a viable group and double that number to provide a comprehensive service in the long term. First Responders use their own cars and need to buy and maintain the comprehensive emergency first aid kits (including defibrillators and oxygen), the high visibility clothing and safety equipment which each of them must carry. This kit is expensive and it costs at least £1,500 to equip each volunteer.
We organised a public meeting in March 2025 and currently have Jordan and George have 9 volunteers signed up and waiting to undertake training with the Scottish Ambulance Service. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the long term fundraising and organisation for the group.
For 2025 our aims are to raise enough funds to equip all the volunteers who complete training, set up a basic organisation to organise an initial on call rota and further training, and plan the development of a robust organisation over the next 3 years.
